BizBash: Fresh Faces: Lori Karmel and Dominique Beckers of We Take the Cake
WHAT THEY DO: Create out-of-the-ordinary sheet,
traditional layer and premium layer cakes. They also focus on corporate gifts, specializing
in Bundt cakes (there's a variety of flavors and sizes), each packaged in its own stylish tin.
HOW THEY GOT STARTED: When Lori Karmel bought We Take the Cake in September
2002, she had her sights set on changing the shop's image and bringing in master cake
maker Dominique Beckers. Beckers, who created cakes for Let Them Eat Cake,
serviced a high-end clientele and wanted to maintain an upscale image. When Karmel
explained her vision of changing the existing casual, tropical image to a sophisticated, elegant
environment, Beckers was intrigued and watchful. "If the image really changed, I was
willing to give it a shot," said Beckers. And in a few short months, the showroom, packaging,
color and logo were redone and We Take the Cake was reborn. In January 2003,
Beckers joined the team and the rest is history.
CLAIM TO FAME: Their cakes not only look good, but taste great, too. "The key lime bundt
cake is our signature cake for corporate gifting," says Karmel. "Everybody loves it. And our
strawberry cake is the favorite specialty flavor."
CLIENTS INCLUDE: Saks Bal Harbour and Boca Raton, Bloomingdale's, Fed Ex Orange
Bowl, Bank Atlantic, Landmark Bank and Mercedes of Fort Lauderdale.
HOW TASTY: Bundt cakes come in two sizes and more than 10 flavors including sour
cream coffee swirl with white chocolate truffle glaze, pumpkin with creamy caramel glaze
and island coconut dusted with Confectioner's sugar. Traditional cakes are available in
more than six flavors and premium cakes include Turtle cake, German chocolate, double
chocolate banana cake, coconut cream desire and more.
ULTIMATE GOAL: "We'd like to be the Tiffany & Company of cakes," Karmel says.
